The Safari Companion: A Guide to Watching African Mammals Buy from: Amazon.co.uk   or Amazon.com Richard D. Estes I came across Safari Companion in a South African bush camp, where it was considered an essential reference tool. The book describes in detail the social behaviors of the large African mammals, including aggressive and defensive postures, mating habits, child rearing techniques, and territory marking habits.

Collins Illustrated Checklist: Birds of Eastern Africa Buy from: Amazon.co.uk   or Amazon.com Ber van Perlo Illustrates every species needed for a trip to Ethiopia, but not always accurately, with minimal text, and with maps that are all too often inaccurate. However, there is no alternative.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania Buy from: Amazon.co.uk   or Amazon.com Zimmerman, et al "The only field guide to use in Kenya. I used this book on a recent trip to East Africa and it was invaluable. No other field guide to this region is comparable. The authors have cut down the hardback handbook to make an excellent field guide, especially for those LBJs such as larks and cisticolas. For any birder or general naturalist visiting Kenya or the adjacent countries this book is invaluable."
