The Complete Guide to the Birdlife of Britain & Europe

This is quite simply the best illustrated guide to Europes birds that I have seen. Every bird is pictured at least five times (and sometimes twenty times) in varying poses within its habitat. Seeing the birds in context, really gives this book the edge. The text , written by an expert, is concise, thorough and up to date. Many of the recent splits are included. The likes of Yelkouan Shearwater and Southern Grey Shrike are illustrated superbly for perhaps the first time in any recent guide. More than a field guide, the book is coffee table size, and certainly deserves to be in the collection of every serious bird watcher.

This bird-finding guide is a reference to the best birding sites of Scotland. Each site is described in terms of the nature of the habitat, the species likely to be observed, the recommended timings for visits to get the best from the site, and a calendar showing which species are found in the various seasons. The site accounts also mention other interesting wildlife that may be encountered - for example, Scotland is home to some of Britain's most enigmatic mammal species.

The standard of new field guides for the United Kingdom just keeps on improving. This book is as good as any I have seen. The real strength of this guide over its rivals is the wealth of information provided. I was particularly impressed with the comments on population and conservation status, which are flagged up for each species. It makes you understand how rare a bird is, when you realise that its population is down to the last 100 pairs! The illustrations are super, distribution maps are accurate and the price is excellent...buy it.
